The Brief
Commercial Bank of Africa had built a strong reputation in corporate banking, but its traditional identity no longer reflected its ambitions in the growing retail market. The brief was to reposition the bank under the simpler and more contemporary CBA brand, creating an experience that felt modern, accessible and customer-focused while retaining the trust associated with one of Kenya's oldest financial institutions.
The retail environment would become the most visible expression of this transformation, bringing the new brand to life for customers across the branch network.
Retail Design and Implementation
The rebrand extended far beyond a new logo and visual identity. Every aspect of the branch environment was redesigned to communicate the new CBA brand, from external architecture and signage to customer flow, furniture, finishes and service areas.

The new branches replaced the formal banking halls of the past with open, welcoming environments that encouraged conversation and engagement. Contemporary materials, integrated brand graphics and improved customer touchpoints created a consistent experience that reflected CBA's values of simplicity, professionalism and innovation.
The retail rollout established a distinctive branch network that differentiated CBA within Kenya's increasingly competitive banking sector, reinforcing the brand at every customer interaction.
Brand Impact
The branch transformation became one of the strongest expressions of the new CBA brand. Rather than simply communicating change, the environments allowed customers to experience it.
By aligning the physical experience with the bank's new positioning, the retail network strengthened brand recognition, built customer confidence and demonstrated that CBA was evolving into a progressive retail bank. The consistency and quality of the customer environments helped establish CBA as one of Kenya's most recognisable and respected banking brands.
Legacy
The transformation from Commercial Bank of Africa to CBA demonstrated how strategically designed customer environments can become powerful brand assets. The project showed that retail design is far more than architecture, it is a tangible expression of brand strategy, shaping customer perceptions and creating experiences that build lasting trust and loyalty.
