The Brief
Following the merger of UBA and Standard Trust Bank, the newly enlarged organisation embarked on an ambitious growth strategy under the leadership of Tony Elumelu. The objective was not simply to create Nigeria's largest bank, but to build one of Africa's leading banking brands. [source]
As the branch network expanded rapidly across the country, UBA recognised that the customer experience needed to become as consistent as the brand itself. OneTwoSix was commissioned to develop a contemporary branch concept that would create a recognisable retail identity across the network while introducing a more premium banking experience for affluent customers.
Retail Design and Implementation
Rather than designing individual branches, OneTwoSix developed a comprehensive branch design platform that could support UBA's long-term growth ambitions.
Architecture, interiors, customer journeys, furniture, signage and brand communications were brought together into a single retail concept, creating a distinctive customer experience that reflected UBA's values of confidence, innovation and professionalism. The design balanced operational efficiency with a contemporary brand expression, ensuring that every element of the environment reinforced the bank's evolving identity.

A key component of the programme was the introduction of dedicated Premium Banking environments. These spaces provided affluent customers with a more private, comfortable and personalised banking experience while remaining unmistakably part of the wider UBA brand. The result was a branch concept capable of serving different customer segments without compromising brand consistency.
Brand Impact
The new branch concept gave physical expression to UBA's ambition of becoming Africa's leading banking brand.
Rather than relying solely on advertising and communications, the branch environment became a powerful brand asset, translating the bank's vision into an experience customers could immediately recognise and trust. As UBA expanded its footprint across Nigeria, the new design language strengthened brand recognition and reinforced the bank's commitment to delivering a consistent customer experience.
The Premium Banking environments further demonstrated that a single brand could successfully deliver differentiated experiences without fragmenting its identity, helping position UBA as a sophisticated, customer-focused financial institution serving a broad spectrum of retail and business customers.
Legacy
The UBA programme demonstrated the strategic role that customer environments play in building a banking brand. More than a branch design project, it established a retail platform that translated brand strategy into a consistent customer experience, one capable of supporting one of Africa's most ambitious banking organisations during a period of exceptional growth.
It remains an early example of how thoughtfully designed environments can become an integral part of a bank's brand strategy, strengthening recognition, customer confidence and long-term brand equity.
